Series: Discourse analysis and Bible Translation

Dave Brunn

In the previous video Dave discussed high levels of language and how they affect the interpretation of the text. Once we have determined the communication situation and how it affects meaning, the purpose of the author and the text type used, then we can consider how it is divided into paragraphs and other units. When we studied grammar at school, we all learnt to write paragraphs and how to indent them, we just didn’t talk about it using discourse analysis jargon. In this video Dave introduces two very important factors in the art of paragraph-making: cohesion and boundaries. They are like two sides of the same coin, working closely together to help us divide information correctly.
