Discourse features are an important part of learning language. It’s true small units such as words and sentences are significant, but large units also need to be analysed as they vary from language to language. In this video Dave talks about analysing not just words and sentences, but also the larger units of language. It’s important to alternate between higher and lower levels of language. Some of us are good at looking at the big picture while others are better at looking at the details. To really be effective in cross-cultural communication, we all need a better focus on both the big picture and the details so we can alternate back and forth.
